Caveat Emptor

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Call me cranky (I am. I always am when I’m sick.), but why don’t people do their research? I have an online acquaintance who is a very nice woman, but she’s like a train wreck when it comes to picking publishers. This is the third time now that she’s submitted to the wrong place.

I’m not sure she could have done anything about the first one. This was ten or twelve years ago, before the writing community really got on the Internet.

Then there was publisher number 2, one of the companies that imploded a year or two ago and filed for bankruptcy. I don’t blame her for this one because I hadn’t heard any rumblings either when she signed with them, but things sure came out later.

But that brings me to publisher number 3. This weekend, she posts on the board to wish her luck because she’s hoping XYZ publisher will make her an offer for her books. The name of the publisher set off a few alarm bells, but I decided I must have remembered wrong. And between my dad being in the hospital and my getting sick, I didn’t have the time or energy to reply anyway, but others wished her luck.

Then on Monday, she posts a note thanking everyone for their good wishes and saying that one person she knew from another loop had said she’d heard rumors about XYZ publisher and wanted to know if we’d heard anything bad about them.

Remember I told you alarm bells went off in my mind when I first heard which publisher, so I did a quick online search. In less than 1 minute, I not only had the search completed, but I clicked on the second link and had time to scan the blog article about this company.

Now this is where I get cranky. Didn’t this author acquaintance of mine do any research before submitting her material? You’d think that would be the first thing she’d do, especially considering how badly her previous two experiences turned out. But apparently not. Not when I was able to turn up the information and read it so quickly and she didn’t know anything about it. I feel like saying something to her because you know what? If that were my work, I’d definitely be checking them out six ways to Sunday. Heck, I’ve done this for every NYC publisher my work has been submitted to and I find out what I can about the editors, too. Why wouldn’t I want to know as much as I can?

Would you buy a house and then check out the neighborhood and the schools? Of course not. Why is sending to a publisher any different? It’s still a huge investment on the writer’s part–not just of her time, but of her heart, her soul, and her talent as well.

Writers research any publisher you’re going to submit to big or small. For heaven’s sake don’t be a casualty and don’t expect other people to do your research for you. I think what has me crankiest about this situation is how simple and fast it was to find the information. Now, after I posted, she’s finally, finally checking into this company. Sigh.

Down the Garden Path

Monday, April 28th, 2008

I’d love to be scintillating and witty today since I’m blogging, but I’m afraid that isn’t going to happen. Last week, while I was burning the candle at both ends, I managed to run myself–and my immune system–down to the point that I got sick. So instead of witty, I’ll settle for coherent–but even that might be a stretch.

The week before last, I received an email from the nursery that I’d ordered flowers from to let me know that my bulbs had shipped. I panicked. Not only did I not have time to plant them, especially with my dad going in the hospital in a few days, but it was too cold here. Then I read farther down and it said it had shipped from Holland and that I should see them in 21-25 days. Whew, I thought, three weeks is much better, and in May, things should warm up here.

On Tuesday (five days laster), the day my dad had surgery, the doorbell rings. It’s UPS and there are my bulbs. Gah!

I threw the boxes in the refrigerator and there they sit, unopened. And I was right about it being too cold to plant. When I woke up Saturday morning, there was a good inch of snow on my deck and it was still falling! Sunday was a little better until late in the afternoon when it snowed again. It’s the end of April! I’m still wearing my winter jacket and my hat and we won’t see high temperatures in the 60s again until late in the week. Global warming? What global warming?

It’s a darn good thing that I didn’t take the styrofoam covers off my peony tree and burning bushes and it’s a good thing that I left the mulch over my bulbs.

And speaking of the bulbs I planted last fall, green has been spotted in the garden! I haven’t had time to walk down there and look at it yet, but I’m hoping by the end of this week it’ll be warm enough and dry enough and I’ll be rid of this cold to hike down and admire my future flowers.

Company Gifts

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Next month I have one of those milestone anniversaries with my employer and for my years of service, I received a catalog from which to choose a gift. I don’t get my commemorative pin and a gift, I had to choose one or the other. So I combed through the catalog and discounted most of the items as being things I wasn’t interested in, but they had a pair of binoculars and I don’t have any of those.

Yea, I thought, getting more excited, binoculars. Then I could bird watch (turkey, hawk, etc) from my house or deck and get a good view. I could also check out my garden when it’s wet and rainy (like today) without getting my feet wet. Cool, I’m going to choose binoculars!

But before I made the selection, I thought, wow, I don’t know much about binoculars. I should check out a few reviews and see if this pair/brand/magnification is decent. I went to Amazon first since they carry everything and so many products have reviews. Do you know what I found? The company gift was for sale for $13! Gee, thanks, NWA, but no thanks. I’ll buy my own binoculars and I’ll pick something that’s halfway decent.

I guess I should be grateful I get anything, right? But I figure by the time they buy in bulk and get their discount, we’re probably talking, what? $5? Maybe $7? I went with the commemorative pin instead. After all, there might not be an NWA after the merger mania dust settles.

I spent the evening at the hospital again. My dad looks better, but progress is slow. I want him to be better now. I’m still exhausted and I think my mom is, too.

Report

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

My dad’s surgery went well and he was groggy, but talking shortly after he was brought to his room. Tonight, he was hooked up to a gazillion things and everything was being monitored. Tomorrow, the nurse said, they’ll have him on his feet and walking and the doctor anticipates him coming home some time this weekend.

As good as things look right now, I’ll be holding my breath until he’s farther on the road to recovery. Even so, I feel as if a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. This was really worrying me. And when he’s all okay, then the rest of the worry will ease.

We left a little after 7pm so that my dad could get some sleep. When I brought my mom home, she had a mallard duck under one of the front bushes.

I’ll be back at the hospital tomorrow.

Wild Kingdom

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Well, it happened again. I don’t know what it is about Sundays in my neighborhood, but the wildlife always comes out on this day–usually when I’m writing. It’s getting to be almost routine to look up from the computer and see some kind of animal or bird around. Today, though, I think takes the award for weirdest sighting–a wild turkey. Yes, I kid you not, I had a wild turkey in my backyard.

Here he is, walking up the side of my yard.

He’s walking from my yard into the one next door

In the middle of the yard next door

And now he’s walking toward the house beyond the one next door

And here I thought the hawk sightings were cool. :-)

Other than this, it was a very quiet weekend. This hero and heroine are nocturnal again, preferring to work late at night than during the day. That makes me nuts because I like to sleep. :-/

My dad goes in for his surgery on Tuesday. I’ll try to post on Wednesday, but no promises.

Gallimaufry

Friday, April 18th, 2008

I found gallimaufry in the thesaurus–it means hodgepodge–and I decided to use it since it’s perfect since I intend to jump all over the map today and I’m unlikely to ever use it again. And not just as a blog post title. ;-) I’m starting with the bragging first; I hope y’all don’t mind.

First of all, I received my first ever Publisher’s Weekly review for In Twilight’s Shadow! Mostly it’s a recap of the plot, but at the very end, they say:

“Maia is a strong, realistically vulnerable heroine, and gruff Creed melts almost immediately.”

I’m in the Mass Market section with authors who have much bigger names than me. I’m hugely thrilled and now I need to get to the library so I can make a copy of the review for my scrapbook!

I also found a completely fabulous review at Simply Romance Reviews.

In Twilight’s Shadow was a fast paced intricately woven tale of suspense, revenge, love, and possession.”

Another piece of good news at a time where I need it so much. I guess I owe the universe a thank you.

People who’ve been reading my blog for a while know that I’m a rabid baseball fan. I’ve had to curb myself numerous times to keep from talking about games and other happenings in the sport too much–sometimes the temptation is difficult to resist. Now, however, I think I can safely promise y’all no more baseball talk over here. I found a new place to talk ball! Major League Baseball allows fans to talk about the game over on their blog site. I’ve already posted at Patti’s Baseball Blog. I need to remember to add this to the sidebar.

Gone With the Wind

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

We’ll have to chalk this up as Wednesday’s post early–or maybe Monday’s post late. It has been one hellaciously busy week, so far and it shows no signs of letting up.

After a week off, I returned to the Evil Day Job (EDJ) on Monday just in time to hear the NWA/Delta talk really take off. I also had to catch up on all the work that piled up in my absence. If y’all have turned on a television lately, you know that after months of talk, the merger did get announced. Oh happy day. Not. Today we had two meetings to tell us basically what you’ve all seen on the news.

Anyway, let’s move on to Adventures in Gale-Force Winds.

It is really windy here today, blowing steady at 30 and gusting up to 40mph. I arrive home and go to back in the garage when I look to the right and see a piece of downspout from my gutters nearly in the street right at the edge of my yard and my neighbors. I put the car in park, jump out, and grab it before it blows away.

I decide I better check the other gutters and make sure those downspout extensions are still attached. They are, but as I’m staring out the patio doors, it finally registers that my wind spinner is gone. I have that thing on a shepherd’s hook and it’s never come off before, but it did today. I decided to check email first, then I pulled on my shoes, put on a jacket, and went to reconnect my downspout. I put a rock on the inside of it to weight it down and began the search for the missing wind spinner. I found that in the middle of my backyard.

I walked over to my parents’ house, and after about an hour, I returned home–and discovered my downspout was missing again. Sigh. So I searched and searched for it on both sides of the street, but I couldn’t find it anywhere.

Instead, I noticed that another long rain spout was knocked off and the cap from my porch railing was off, and oh yeah, my welcome mat (which is fairly heavy) was folded up against the bottom of the door.

Now I’m sitting here, listening to the wind whip by the house and wondering what other pieces are going to come off before they finally die down. At the very least, I’ll be out buying a new section of downspout soon.

The Friday Post

Friday, April 11th, 2008

It is a raw, miserable day here. Yesterday, it was so windy that the snow was coming in sideways and this morning I saw my downspout for one of my gutters in my backyard, noticed the neighbors have a huge tree branch down, and the little snowflake on my wind spinner is all bent up. That was some storm!

Because it snowed and we were still getting freezing drizzle, I drove my dad to his doctor’s appointment with the surgeon that will be removing his kidney. The doctor said that nine times out of ten, they remove the kidney arthroscopicly, but in my dad’s case, they want to open him up to remove it. That means instead of an overnight stay, he’ll be in the hospital for five or six days and restricted for about six weeks afterward on what he can do. Surgery is scheduled for a week and a half from now.

I have to say that my dad can be funny. We were supposed to get 2-4 inches of snow and he wonders if I”ll have trouble getting out with “all that snow.” 1) I drive a SUV with 4-wheel drive and I’ve taken it to work in 18″ of heavy March snow in the past. I don’t think 2-4 is going to stop me. 2) For years now, he’s said this every time any snow is in the forecast. There’s also been times that he’s told me to call him if I can’t get out in the morning to call and he’ll come over and snow blow. Um, see item 1 about the 4-wheel drive. The other thing he said yesterday was his car probably wouldn’t make it out. How does 2-4 inches of snow translate into being snowbound? I haven’t figured this one out yet.

Anyway, needless to say, I didn’t have any trouble getting the SUV out of the driveway with the maybe 1 inch of snow that fell. (We ended up with more rain than they predicted.)

The other thing that’s kind of funny is that I’d planned to take time off from work when he had surgery, but he’s already made other arrangements. One of his lodge buddies is going to drive him and Mom to the hospital and I can come when I get off work. Oookay, Dad.

He’s got a great attitude, though, and I think that’s more than half the battle. And the even better news is that the doctor doesn’t think Dad will need chemo. He’s not 100% certain of that and won’t be until the surgery, but it would be nice if my dad could miss that.

Keep sending positive vibes for a little while longer. Thanks!

Life Gets Back to Semi-Normal

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

Or Adventures in Calling the Cable Company.

Things are on hold with my dad right now–at least until his doctor’s appointment on Friday. We’ll know more then about when he has surgery. In the meantime, things have returned to how they were before he went into the hospital–except, of course, we all know nothing is normal.

So let’s talk about the cable company. I ordered the Major League Baseball package so I could watch more games. (I love to write with a game playing and there just isn’t enough baseball on television any more.) The other day, though, after their free trial ended, I go to turn on the Cubs game and I get a “Not Authorized” message. Thinking that the rep I’d talked to had done set it up wrong, I talked to another sales rep and he assured me that everything was fine–and oh, yeah, I’d been double charged for the package. I’ll have to talk to a tech, he tells me, but he fixed the double billing.

The woman gets on the phone and tells me that all of MLB is down and that they’re working on it. No clue when it’ll be taken care of, but I should just wait.

Eight hours later, I was still waiting. I called again.

This guy says he’ll reset my box because I shouldn’t be having any problems. Apparently he had no idea that MLB had ever been down and it made me wonder if the woman was just making things up. Anyway, he starts the reset process and puts me on hold. While he’s away, the box shuts off and comes back on and I have baseball! When he comes back on the line, I tell him everything’s great, thanks and hang up.

Little did I know what was lurking just minutes away….

Before I can lift the remote to figure out which game I want to watch, the cable box shuts itself off again. When it returns, I can only get channels 13 and 906! I call the cable company back.

The guy tells me I’ll have to get a new box. I’m like, huh? It was working fine a few minutes ago. Nope, I have to exchange it for a new box. He can’t reset it again because that will damage the box worse than it already is–although I don’t know how it gets worse than only 2 channels being accessible. I’m like, but, but I’ll have to move the entertainment center again. Ah, gee, and all the pictures on top of the entertainment center. I’ll have to call back to get the new box activated. Ugh!

His response? Yeah, too bad, sorry. Grrr.

Not quite ready to accept that response, I turned the cable box off again, gave it a minute, and then turned it back on. This time it said the guide was loading. This was an improvement. I wait, and lo and behold, everything is working again and I have baseball!

My final fall back would have been unplugging the cable box for a short time and then plugging it back in again, but it didn’t go that far.
