Looks Like I Picked the Wrong Day to Stop Drinking Coffee

Last night, I decided I needed to kick the coffee habit. I usually only drink one cup a day, but I desperately need that caffeine kick. This isn’t the first time I’ve tried to quit, but I was on deadline when I made the other attempts and I quickly resumed the coffee, needing to meet my deadline.

Now, though, my next book is due March 1 and I don’t have revisions yet on the last book, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity.

Um, yeah, while I’m still having insomnia issues. I had a grand total of 3 hours of sleep last night. Maybe.

I popped a vitamin B. That got me through my morning routine and to my car. It’s not helping at the Evil Day Job (EDJ). I’m sitting here, fighting to keep my eyes open. I’ve done a lot of walking around the office, on the theory that humans don’t sleep on their feet.

So far, I’m holding out, but if this is what it feels like to be without coffee, I don’t know how I’m going to make it.

Last night, my internet connection went down which is why I’m blogging from the EDJ today. It’s also why I didn’t get a chance to answer comments yet. I’ll do that as soon as I can.

Yikes. I applaud your effort and hope that you can overcome. I personally know, without a shadow of doubt, that if I don’t have my coffee in the morning I’ll either be exceedingly evil, or incapable of speaking intelligently. Now, having said that, I only started drinking coffee about 8 years ago, before that never touched the stuff… Thanks to my hubby and International Creamers Irish Cream, I’m an addict ;)

That is definitely a tough one, but one that I can relate to. I have restless legs syndrome which is now thankfully under control with medication. Before I would get 2-4 hours of sleep a night and at that time I was a bank teller. Definitely not a pretty situation.

When do you usually drink coffee? What about strong tea instead?

    Annette,

You might be my twin! I didn’t start drinking coffee until about 10 years ago and it was International French Vanilla Cafe that got me hooked. And I’m not a happy morning person without coffee–that’s one of the reasons why I kept drinking it. I hope I can make it, too. I lasted one day which is longer than I’ve made it before. :-)

    Joyce,

I can’t imagine working with money on such a short amount of sleep. One of the things I said at work today was that it was a good thing I wasn’t a brain surgeon. :-)

I always have my cup of coffee first thing in the morning while I’m reading email. The problem is that I don’t like tea. I’ve tried to get into it herbals and green tea, but I couldn’t. :-(

*clutches my coffee cup to my chest*

I gave up coffee when I was pregnant three times, but I'm addicted, I say so freely, and I don't want to stop drinking it. Could I cut back some? Sure. The joke at my house is "the coffee pot is always on."

I drink Caribou nearly exclusively thanks to the years we lived in MN. I still mail order it even though we've been back here in MO for 8 years now.

I don't like herbals either, although I can occasionally do green. In the morning, though, say when I'm up Dark & Early to write (4-5 a.m) my stomach is sometimes too "fragile" for strong coffee. Then I drink Irish or English breakfast. Green just isn't strong enough. I have to be really careful when steeping, though. I don't like the increasingly bitter taste of tea that's steeped more than say 3 minutes. That early…I typically forget the pot and then have to throw the whole thing out. :-(

    Joely,

It has not been an easy two days. I’m craving coffee something fierce and I only usually have one cup a day. I want to break my addiction and enjoy a cup a couple of times a month without having to have one.

And I hear you about coffee sometimes upsetting your stomach in the morning. Before I drank coffee, I used to eat breakfast, but I found I can’t have food with coffee first thing in the morning. Guess what went? Yep, breakfast. :-)
