Freeze Frame!

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Before I get started, I’d like to remind everyone that Carolyn Jewel is giving away a copy of My Wicked Enemy to a lucky commenter on her post. I mirror this blog in four different places and Carolyn has generously offered to give away a second copy–one on MySpace and one on Blogger, so if you haven’t commented yet, what are you waiting for? The drawing will take place June 10th.

Now on to my Sunday night post:

I spent most of Saturday on two things–making notes on the world I built in my short story, Blood Feud and looking for pictures of two sets of heroes and heroines.

The notes on Blood Feud were necessary because I have ideas for two more stories set in that same world, but I couldn’t remember all the details that I’d put in the short story. The thing that surprised me was how much I’d forgotten. Or maybe it shouldn’t surprise me since it was due on the same day that my book had to be turned in to Tor and I was really thundering on the pages. I ended up with four pages of notes.

On Friday, the characters in these two stories finally gave me their names, and that means it’s getting close to time to work on them.

Armed with notes and my characters names, I attempted to put together a short synopsis. Yeah, I know, but I can do short if I really have to. Sometimes. :-) But I kept running into a problem. While I knew general information about the characters and kind of had a bead on their attitudes, I didn’t feel like I had a good grip on them and that tripped me up on the synopsis. That meant it was time to go hunting for character pictures.

Ah, yes, either one of my favorite things to do or one of my least favorite depending on how long it takes to find the right images. For one couple, I already had their pictures on my hard drive and they were actually together in the shots. Yea!

Immediately, I started getting information that I didn’t have before, especially about the heroine. That’s why I love having the pictures. I know when I’ve found the right one and it just unleashes a torrent of information.

Couple two, however, wasn’t going to prove this easy. I thought the hero would be easiest to locate because I had a good idea of his personality and I believed that I had a good idea of what he looked like. It was his heroine that I found first. She was a surprise. Younger-looking than I expected (keep in mind she’s supernatural so while she looks young, she isn’t) and…moodier. Very much at home in the night, which I knew, but the picture that best represented her really underscored this.

As difficult and time consuming as it had been to find her picture, her hero’s was even more difficult to locate. I thought I knew what he looked like. I was wrong. I didn’t figure it out until I kept circling back to two men–both who had longish blondish hair.

I thought he had dark hair. I thought it was worn conservatively short. I thought he looked older than about 23, even though I knew he was a paranormal dude, too. Once I finally was able to give up what I thought I knew and go with the guy that felt the most right, things clicked for me with him, too. Surfer dude. Who’d have thought? Obviously, not me. :-)

And this took all day. Literally. Today, I worked on my WIP (Work In Progress) instead of either of these stories, but I don’t look at it as wasted time. Now, with these images clear in my head, I’ll have more to mull over and mulling is always productive.

Guest Blogger: Carolyn Jewel

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Please welcome my guest blogger, Carolyn Jewel!

Carolyn and I became friends when we worked on the Crimson City series together and hashed out the demon world between us. The poor woman was subjected to long rambling emails (and anyone who follows this blog knows how I can go on and on) that she was forced to answer while trying to write A Darker Crimson. Actually, I think I subjected her to long, rambling emails while we were working on our stories for Shards of Crimson, too, so the fact that we keep in touch is a testament to Carolyn’s patience and wonderfulness. :-)

In addition to being patient, Carolyn also writes great paranormal romance and I thought y’all might like to meet her and learn more about her latest book!

Thanks so much, Patti, for hosting me!

I’m Carolyn Jewel and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to be here. As you may have guessed already, I’m a writer and I have a new book which I will be shamelessly pimping to you shortly. But I’m going to give away a book, too, so there’s something in it for you guys, not to mention I have a pretty hot cover which is worth looking at, I think. It’s blue with flames and a mostly nekkid guy. I wish I knew the guy on the cover, I would say thank you and probably forget my name. So, maybe it’s for the best that I haven’t met him.

So, a little bit about myself. Like Patti, I have a geekish sort of job, which over here, I believe I can safely call the Evil Day Job or EDJ. Some people at work read my blog, so I have to be careful when I’m at home. Rats. So, at my EDJ, I am a SQL Server Database Administrator, and I will be kind to you all and say nothing more except about my no-thrills-a-minute EDJ. Just so you know, I do not have, nor have I ever had, a pocket protector. The best part of my EDJ is that every day is casual day. I live in Northern California and to be honest, compared to Minnesota where Patti lives, we do not have actual weather. I wear sandals pretty much year round, though sometimes I have to break out the regular shoes.

So, now I’ll start pimping. My book is called My Forbidden Desire. If you click through to my website, you can check out places to buy the book, read some reviews and watch the trailer. I used a new company to do my book trailer so I’m quite interested in your opinion of it. And what do you guys think of the cover? Blue nekkid guys don’t work for everyone, so let me know in the comments or something. You can also read Chapter 1 at my website, should be so moved. My Forbidden Desire was a top pick from Romantic Times! That was pretty exciting, I have to say.

Here’s the cover blurb:

Torn Between. . .

Alexandrine Marit is a witch in mortal danager. An evil mage craves the powerful, mysterious talisman that supplies her magic, and the only person who can keep her alive is a dark and dangerous fiend called Xia. With his fierce animosity toward witches, he’s hardly the ideal bodyguard. Yet as days turn into nights, she can’t deny the white-hot
passion between them.

Desire and Temptation . . .

Xia hates witches. They enslave and mercilessly kill his kind. But he’s been ordered to protect Alexandrine, who, to his surprise, has a spirit he admires and a body he longs to possess. With the mage and his henchmen closing in, Alexandrine and her protector must trust the passion that can unite them . . . or risk losing everything to the enemies who can destroy them both.

ISBN: 978-0-446-17824-2

My Forbidden Desire is the second book set in this world of fiends and mages. The first was My Wicked Enemy which, by the way, has orange flames on the cover and another hot guy. I’ll send one commenter a copy of My Wicked Enemy. Here’s a question for you to answer, if you want, which I hope you do because I’m curious. Be as brief or descriptive as you feel is necessary:

What’s your favorite supernatural creature and why?

The Soul Mate Issue

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

So let’s talk about soul mates/destined mates/whatever mates. Paranormal writers in particular seem to use this idea a lot and I’ve seen comments from readers about how tired they are of this because it takes the place of relationship development. It’s left me leery of using any of these trigger words in my stories/synopses even though I look at soul mates in a drastically different way.

My view of soul mates is that both the hero and heroine have free will and they can decide not to pursue the connection. With my heroes and heroines, they generally have a lot of changing they have to do before a relationship will work between them and I operate on the theory that my characters have as little desire to change as real people do. And who actually wants to deal with their issues? If they weren’t deep-seated and emotionally difficult, the characters would have faced them long ago.

For an example, Kel from the fourth Light Warriors book has been running from his problems for more than a year. It’s not working great for him, but that doesn’t matter–he remains in full avoidance mode. And then his heroine shows up and asks for help. He has several reasons why he agrees to come to her aid, but the one that swings him is that when he touches her, his mind quiets. Kel wants to use her presence to silence his nightmares, his memories, the turmoil he’s in. In other words, he thinks she can help him avoid his issues more successfully than he’s managing on his own. Do you see a man here who’s thinking, whoo hoo, I found my soul mate and now my life will be rainbows?

I don’t. If Kel didn’t believe there was something in it for him (lessening of his torment), he’d walk away from her without a second thought.

Or to discuss a book that’s been released, how about Conor and Mika from Through a Crimson Veil? A demon can recognize his destined mate the moment he lays eyes on her. Conor is unaware of this, but Mika knows and she’s aware immediately of who Conor is to her. But Conor is emotionally damaged by his upbringing. Although he’s half demon, he was raised to hate all demons and he hates that part of himself. There’s no way, no how he’s falling for a female demon, but once it starts happening anyway, it still might not work out because Conor continues to suppress and deny his own demon heritage.

Mika’s not stupid. She understands that if Conor can’t accept himself, he won’t be able to accept what she is either, and the moment she does something he considers too demon, their relationship would start to crumble. It doesn’t matter that they’re mates. Things won’t work between them long term if he doesn’t do the hard work it takes to change.

That’s my take on soul mates–it’s a nice component, but it’s no guarantee of anything. Free will. Maybe the idea of love scares the character enough to run from it and the heroine. Maybe the character isn’t willing to do what it takes to heal and change so that they can have a long and happy relationship with the hero. To me, that soul connection is only an extra prod to encourage the character to move forward, but it’s no guarantee that they will. So far, I haven’t had a character refuse to change, but then I tend to put them in positions where no matter how hard it is to change, it’s worse for them to not change.

Done!

Today, I made the final polish on the time travel short story and sent if off to the editor. This story is set on Jarved Nine (the same world as Ravyn’s Flight and Eternal Nights) and the hero is Troll Maglaya, he’s a member of Wyatt’s team and takes place seven years after EN.

I might have said this before, but I love Troll and I’m so glad I was able to write about him. The really interesting thing is that I had no idea what his story was, only that he had one and that it happened after all the rest of his teammates were married. The time travel aspect gave me a way (I felt) to leap frog past the other romances. As it stands, readers will meet Sasha who is Flare’s heroine and will also see Alex Sullivan (aka The Big Chill) and Damon Brody has a non-speaking cameo appearance. If you read the story (and if it stays in after edits), you’ll find out that he and Ravyn had more children after Cam.

My one regret is that I didn’t get to do a full-length story, but if I did, I know what it is now. It’s almost exactly what was laid out in the short story, only the events would take place over more time and I’d get the suspense/action in there. I was forced to skip both those things to get the story finished within the word count guidelines.

Anyway, it’s good to be done and now it’s back to the WIP. It feels like forever since I worked on that!
