Guest Blogging

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

I’m a guest today over on my agent’s blog. The post isn’t up right now (5am central time), but it should be there some time this morning. I talked about The Terminator and kick-butt characters.

Help! Please!

Friday, October 31st, 2008

My agent is going to have a paranormal romance week on her blog in November and she asked me to write a guest post. I said I would, but I’m not coming up with any kind of topic. So let me throw it out to the world–what would you like to see a paranormal author blog about during paranormal week? Any and all suggestions would be most gratefully appreciated.

All week I’ve been debating whether or not to buy a Kindle. Every time I think I’ve firmly made the decision not to buy one (There’s a $50 discount until Nov 1 thanks to Oprah), someone else gets one and starts talking about how great it is. The thing is that even with the discount it’s still over $300 and that price tag just makes me balk. I want one, but I really don’t need it.

My problem is I love gadgets. Not all gadgets, but if it’s tied in to books or computers or both in some way, I have to fight myself. And with the Kindle the ease of research and the ease in which facts can be highlighted are two very tempting components. The best part is that say I need a book on a certain topic and it’s on Kindle, instead of waiting days to get it, I could have it in a minute and do the research. How cool would that be? And I could load my manuscripts on there and do some minor editing while I was waiting for an oil change or something.

And darn it, I’m talking myself into it again! I thought I’d pretty much managed to corral the latest urge. If it weren’t for the $50 off coupon expiring Nov 1 I could just say I’d pick it up in a couple of months, but because of that deal, I have to make a decision now.

So here I sit, waffling. If it weren’t over $300 it wouldn’t be such a huge deal, but it is and my Evil Day Job is up in the air since we were bought out this week. Argh! Want vs. need. Which wins?

Characters Blogging

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

I’m still listening to workshops from National and one of the panelists talked about having one of her characters blog. We did this with the Crimson City series, and while it was weird at first, it eventually became “normal” to write the characters in voice and in first person. Some characters were easier for me to write than others and so they got the screen time even if they weren’t major players in Through a Crimson Veil.

So after hearing this workshop and being reminding of the Crimson blog (it’s still up and available for reading by the way at Crimson Blog), I thought why not do this with my Gineal series?

There are days where I have a hard time coming up with something to say that anyone would be interested in. I don’t talk too much about the books I’m writing any more–partially because of worry over spoilers–and with the current Work In Progress (WIP) I have to be more circumspect than usual or it will ruin Edge of Night which comes out next July. Blogging in character could be a good alternative.

Then I started wondering who would blog? My options were extremely limited because most of them don’t have the interest. Shona from Edge of Dawn was an option, but to stay on the timeline for readers, she’d be blogging before she had any idea magic existed. Not that interesting, I’m guessing for readers.

My next thought was having a blog by a character who’s been in all three books. That leaves me with Nessia, the council leader, or Taber, a member of the Gineal council. Possible, but would either one of them blog? Probably not. Then I thought what if this was Nessia’s private journal? That might work, but I’m never used her as a Point of View (POV) character in any of the stories.

I also thought Seth might make an interesting blogger, but it’s not as if I can rely on him. Besides, Seth would be using the forum to further his own agenda. Still, he’s someone to keep in mind.

Anyway, since no one really popped out at me, I guess I’ll be blogging for a while longer.

I’m Free!

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Hello, world, I’m ba-ack!

After many late nights, lots of hard work, and every hour of vacation time I have on the books at the Evil Day Job, I have finished the yet-untitled Work In Progress and have sent it to my editor at Tor! Whooo hooo!!! Wait! I always put up the dancing Hobbes when a book is finished. Let me run over and grab him.

There we go, dancing Hobbes, now the celebration is complete!

I have to say, it feels totally weird to be online using the laptop. I’ve had my wifi turned off forever–or at least it feels like forever. It’s also hugely strange to be watching baseball with the sound on. During the past couple of months, I’ve done nothing but watch games with the sound muted while I wrote and wrote and wrote! Wow, I might even try to watch the movie I’ve had from Netflix since March. They’re probably wondering what happened to it anyway. :-)

So what’s up for me next? Well, the house must be cleaned. Gah! It looks hideous. I already have all my reference books put away and most of my notes, but the whole house needs a thorough going over. I also need to try and catch up on the half a bazillion emails I’ve barely skimmed over the past couple of months and my garden is full of weeds! I must get in there and take care of that. And I need to rescue a couple of plants that my dad potted for me while I was writing. He left them in the garage where there is no sunshine! I forgot to grab them today when I was over there.

I’ve got laundry in the dryer–I haven’t washed clothes in probably 3 weeks. :-) And I need to fill out information for the art department on the latest book and come up with a title. Probably I should hold a contest or something. Of course, that might be too much work for someone in recovery.

I already can’t figure out what to do with myself during lunch tomorrow at work. I always write during lunch hour at the Evil Day Job.

Anyway, hello, all and it’s soooo good to be back!

Hiatus

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

I was hoping not to do this, but I have to. My book is due in 8 days and I just don’t have the time or the energy to blog, too. So the blog is on hiatus until Wednesday July 2nd.

Much About Little

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Sometime yesterday my brain shut down and it never rebooted itself. I’ve been pushing it all day without much success and this blog entry is one more thing that it can’t seem to get it moving on. For around an hour and a half, I’ve been sitting here with this window open, trying to think of what to say.

Not much is going on in my garden right now. I had to cut down the allium flowers because they were going to seed, and while the columbine is blooming, nothing else is. I suppose I could report that my tree lilies are coming up (6 of the 8) or that the tree peony seems to have survived being broken during that storm we had a week or two ago. But that pretty much hits the highlights in a couple of sentences.

I haven’t seen a movie in about forever, haven’t read a book in longer than that, and I’m not even getting loop email because I went no mail on all my Yahoo Groups. I could probably manage to talk for a few paragraphs about the weather–I am from Minnesota after all–but most people outside of the Midwest don’t find weather to be as interesting as we do.

So where does that leave me? Without a topic. Maybe once my brain starts working again.

Shark Encounter

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

I did a Q and A over on my agent’s blog yesterday. If you click over, you can read about my shark encounter in Australia and how I used a visit to Samarai Island in one of my books.

Fresh Fiction

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

I blogged over at Fresh Fiction today about In Twilight’s Shadow, Maia, and risk. The post actually ended up being not that long. I say that because when I wrote it, I thought, uh-oh, I really ran on again. But it doesn’t look too bad posted. I just hope I didn’t make any mistakes. I didn’t proof it as much as I would have liked because I had too much other stuff to do.

On Your Mark

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Ready, set, go! :-) In Twilight’s Shadow comes out today!

Excerpt and Video on my website.

It doesn’t seem to matter how many books I’ve had come out, release day is always exciting. I spent the evening last night writing a couple of guest blogs and a new newsletter. One of the blogs posts today. Check out 2 B Read to read it.
