The Great Time Sink

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

The subheading for this could be How I End Up Behind Schedule. I’ve been working on a proposal for my agent on a paranormal idea and I promised I’d have it to her early next week. I knew where I was and knew how much more I had left to write. After that I’d need to revise, send it to my writing buddies for feedback, and revise again. Completely doable.

And then came the great time sink.

It started innocently enough. Friday night I received my Snow Leopard upgrade for my iMac. This is my desktop unit and it has my printer and scanner hooked up to it. It had taken some work, but I’d managed to set everything up so I could print from my laptop through the wireless network. This is foreshadowing. You might already be guessing where this story is headed.

Also on Friday night, I went looking for pictures of my heroine’s house and I actually found it quickly. Sometimes I can spend hours and hours, days and days looking for the right place, but this one was like the second or third I checked out from the Realty site. Perfect! I even got to bed at a decent hour.

I slept in Saturday morning, had coffee, read email, and since I was still a little groggy, I thought I’d take 15 or 20 minutes and try to find a house plan for my heroine’s townhome. I’d come across a lot of pictures that night before, but that didn’t help me figure out the relationship between the rooms and I needed that. Since the place I’d found was up on so many sites, I figured one of them would have a layout of the rooms posted somewhere. A few minutes and I’d have my plans and be able to finish the first draft of the proposal chapters. Famous last words.

None of the Realty sites had plans for the townhouse, but I did find the name of the builder and the year that subdivision was erected. They surely must have the plans on their site, especially since it’s a big, multi-state player in the home-building market.

But no. The project was completed and I couldn’t find any archives of the older projects on their site. I checked other townhomes they were currently building in Florida, hoping they were using the same plans, but if they were, I didn’t find it.

I’m on a mission now. I head to the Way Back Machine, AKA the web archives where sites are archived for historical purposes. I found the builder’s site. I chose the right date in 2007 when the units were going up. The links worked in the Way Back Machine, but I hit problem one. The plans were in Flash and it wouldn’t pull up in Firefox. Despair hit. Don’t tell me the WBM doesn’t transfer Flash inserts correctly. After a few attempts at reloading, it finally occurred to me to try IE. Bingo! I have my house plans.

Now another problem hits. I can’t save the Flash images of the two floors. There’s a print button, though, and I press it. Again and again. Nothing prints. I check the printer. Everything looks fine. I print from the iMac without a problem. Hmm. Back to the laptop. Still won’t print.

I begin checking settings both on the iMac and on the laptop. It must be a problem with the networking, but everything looks normal. It had to be the upgrade to Snow Leopard that changed something, but I don’t know what. After messing around with this for about an hour, I decide that’s enough time. I’ll fix it later and just print from the desktop. Safari and Firefox won’t pull up the Flash file at the Way Back Machine and I don’t have IE on the Mac. I enter Parallels where I run XP.

Finally, after reloading the printer drivers, I get a print out of the two floors of the townhouse–and then my scanner won’t work. I surrendered then. Of course, by this time, the damage was done. It was after 2pm and I was frazzled from all those hours spent troubleshooting and trying to print.

Stuff like this happens to me all the time. You think by now I’d realize there’s no such thing as a quick foray, that everything will snowball and lead to a time sink, but I don’t learn. This put me a day behind on my mental schedule, and to get back on track, I had to work late every night this week. I managed to get my proposal chapters out to my writing buddies on the day I wanted to do that by, so I’m back on track. Goal now is to do another revision run over this weekend with their comments and have this to my agent on Tuesday. Just remind me to not do any fast research runs online.

Under Construction

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

I might have told this story before. When I was building my house, the cabinets came in way over the allowance and something had to go. It was the upper cabinets in my laundry room that I said goodbye to, and in all honesty, I didn’t think I’d miss them. As it turned out, I was wrong. I needed that storage.

I started talking about getting the missing cabinets after I turned in Edge of Dawn, but didn’t contact the guy who made them for the house until a few weeks ago. I wanted my new cabinets to match the existing ones exactly and I wanted them to look as if they’d been installed at the same time as the originals. It worked out on all accounts.

This is the before picture on the north side of the room.

This is the before picture on the south side over the laundry tub.

Now for the after pictures:

I think the cabinets make the room look finished in a way it didn’t before. They do match the cabinets below the laundry tub and the counter exactly, a big plus. My last worry was that it would make the room feel smaller, but it really doesn’t. Maybe because the 14″ depth isn’t too much for the space.

I’m all excited now to be filling those cabinets up and relieving the pressure on other cabinets in the house. Maybe I’ll even be able to get the extra pillows off the floor of my bedroom and on a shelf!

The only thing that I’m a little unhappy about is the marks on my walls. I’m going to have to get the cleaner out and fix that, but not tonight. I’m still hoping to get to bed early, although it’s already later than I’d hoped. Ah, well, what’s another day doing head bobs at the Evil Day Job?

Back In the Saddle

Monday, January 7th, 2008

The weekend ended up being really busy, but I did plan to get on here at least once to answer comments. I’m sorry I didn’t, but by the time I was freed up to play online, I was so tired, I couldn’t form a cohesive sentence let alone reply to comments. I finally caught up Sunday night. I hope. At least I don’t think I missed anyone.

I stayed up late Friday night to finish cleaning before I had company come on Saturday and then overslept Saturday. Good thing they were coming at 1pm. :-) I ended up nitpicking at the rooms until the first guest arrived. Then, after everyone left, I straightened up the house again and did laundry. It ended up being another late night.

Sunday was writing. I just hate trying to get back into the groove when I haven’t been regularly writing for a while. I know I’m not alone; one of my writing buddies has the same problem getting back into the swing of things, but it’s a pain. Hours and hours spent with very little progress to show for it. Anyway, I learned Logan is really into classic muscle cars–he restores them–and he’s just finished a Mustang. Or as he says a Bullitt Fastback. Yes, I had to research. Luckily for me, he’s going to be much too busy too soon to worry about Mustangs or Cobras. :-)

Oh, yeah, while I was doing laundry, I watched National Treasure with Nicolas Cage. I thought it was okay, but very far-fetched. That doesn’t always bother me, but it did in this movie. (Nicolas Cage steals the Declaration of Independence to prevent a former business associate from stealing it.) I won’t be watching the sequel.

BTW, did anyone ever see The Pacifier with Vin Diesel? There was a preview for it on the DVD and it looked like it could either be really funny or really stupid and I was curious which it was. If it’s funny, I’ll add it to my queue.

Holiday Talk

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

A couple of weeks ago, my dad was over at my house and working on a project. This is when he commented that it would be nice if I had a sink in my basement–and since I’d have a plumber coming over anyway, I might as well put in a toilet and a shower down there, too. (He’s really good about spending my money. :-)

But the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea. And I’d want to sheet rock the room off so that it was an enclosed space, which means I’d need a light in there and a door. So I hopped online last night and checked out sinks. Because it’ll be a small room, I wanted a pedestal sink and I found one I really liked–for $650. There are sinks that are much cheaper than that, so I might end up with one I don’t like as well if I do this. That’s still very much up in the air. It’s nice to dream about, though.

It ended up being a topic of discussion at Christmas. The holiday was mostly nice for my family–I hope it was for yours as well.

The thing that kept it from being completely nice was the digital camera I gave my parents. I bought them the same brand I have (although theirs is a new, more advanced model) and I thought it would be set up the same way with a nice cradle for the camera. That way they could just grab it and take pictures whenever they wanted. Instead, the new version of the camera requires that the battery be yanked out and put into a recharger, which isn’t nearly as convenient or as simple as mine.

The camera also arrived without a memory card. I was irritated by that until I read the instructions and found out it has some built in memory, so that some pictures could be taken. Now I’ll have to go out and find a 2GB card for my parents. Then they won’t have to worry about running out of space before I can upload the pictures onto the computer for them.
Other than that (and the snow that still hasn’t stopped) it was a good day. The only thing I wanted was a cordless phone and I got that. Setting it up is today’s project–when I get home from the Evil Day Job (EDJ).

Hope your holiday was as nice!

Planet Earth

Monday, December 17th, 2007

Discovery Channel did an all day marathon of episodes of Planet Earth on Sunday and I totally became addicted. In case you’re unfamiliar with it, this is a series that looks at different aspects of our planet, one hour per aspect. Some of the programs covered the deep ocean, the deserts, the antarctic/arctic, the forests, the plains, etc. The photography was stunning and the entire thing was fascinating. They also were able to film things that no one had filmed before and were allowed in places where few are ever permitted to go in order to film. If you haven’t seen this before, definitely watch for this to be rerun. It’s worth it.

And just so you don’t think I was totally worthless this weekend, I was working on galleys while I watched. Fortunately, it’s a left-brained activity, and when I did need to focus more intently, I just muted the television. I’ve got another 65 pages to go to finish my first read through.

I worked my tail off on Saturday. I spent the day unpacking all the boxes in my spare bedroom. Okay, so it’s been a year and a half since I moved in–I just hadn’t gotten around to it. :-) I’m such a geek that I keep standing in the doorway and staring at my nice, clean room. The only thing left to do in there is to organize all my scrapbook supplies, but that’s a job for another day. That leaves the office as the last room that needs to be set up. That’s just going to be ugly. No doubt about it.

The Only Way to Shop

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

While thousands of people across the country shopped the day after Thanksgiving, I took a better approach–I shopped online. :-) I figured out what to get my parents for Christmas–they’re notoriously hard to shop for–and picked that out when I got home from their place on Thursday night. It took a little doing, but I found a great digital camera for them at a good price and with free shipping. I absolutely refuse to pay for shipping this year since all the news shows have said so many online stores are waiving it.

As good as I did on Thanksgiving, though, I did even better on Friday–although it was inadvertent. My dad called a little after 10 and said the plumber was coming out around 1pm to look at the guest bathroom toilet. (We were forced to turn the water off because it wouldn’t stop running.) Anyway, we’d been waiting a few weeks for this guy and yesterday was the day–whether I liked it or not. Fortunately, though, my dad volunteered to come over and handle this and suggested I could go to their house and write.

First, though, I needed to do some cleaning. I ran through the house dusting and vacuuming everything. The place looks good if I do say so myself. :-)

Thursday when I’d been over at my parents’ house, I’d been looking at their TV stand and thinking that wouldn’t make a bad coffee table. Okay, so I’m getting desperate! I’ve been looking and looking and haven’t been able to find anything that’s a small enough size. The few things I have spotted have all been black or some other dark stain and that’s totally not me or my house.

So while I was at my parent’s place, I began searching for the TV stand. Best Buy had it and the price was right, but they only had it in black. :-( I started doing some online searches, trying to find the same brand, but in a wood tone–and without paying $60 in shipping on a $90 TV stand. Somehow, I ended up at Target.com. They didn’t have the unit I was looking at, but I thought since I was there I’d do a little search for coffee tables. They’d had one I’d almost bought last summer, but it was a really dark stain again and I didn’t love it. And Friday, as I’m paging through the hits my search turned up, I spotted it! A coffee table that I liked!

I didn’t let my excitement get too high, after all, over and over again I’d seen something I really liked only to find out it was too big for my small space. Except this time, this time it was perfect. Both length and width fit my maximum requirements. Only drawbacks–the table wasn’t available in the store and they wanted me to pay for shipping. And like I said earlier, I’m not paying for shipping, not even for furniture. :-)

So began my online quest to find another reputable online outlet that wasn’t charging shipping and wasn’t jacking up the price of the furniture. And miracle of miracles, I found one! Yes! Their prices were slightly lower than Target and shipping was free. Happy dog dancing. It truly was meant to be. I wasted no time ordering it and two matching side tables. It isn’t the coolest coffee table I’ve seen, but the one that claims that title was almost as wide as my entire living area. :-) This is my favorite table that fits in my small sized living room.

You’re dying to see what this table looks like, right? Well, even if you’re not, I’m sharing anyway after the year and a half long search, I deserve to show it off a little.

My biggest wish for the coffee table–aside from its size–was that it have a shelf and a drawer(s). Now I’ll have room to put my reference books and manuscripts while I work and I’ll be able to fold up the step ladder I’ve been using as a table and put it away. Hurrah!

The only downside? I didn’t get any writing done today and my goal was to really pound out some pages.

And the other big news for Friday was that my dad asked the plumber to put up my shower curtain rod in the guest bathroom and he did! I bought the shower curtain before I moved into the house so we’re talking about 18 months here and I was beginning to wonder if it would ever go up.

Insert Whatever Title You Like Here

Friday, October 19th, 2007

I spent yesterday cleaning when I got home from work. On the plus side, it’ll save me from having to clean this weekend. On the minus side, that’s all I got done. No time to go through edits or work on anything else. Of course, I still have my edits strewn across the couch, so the house isn’t perfect, but I’m not moving them for the vent sucker guys. It’s bad enough that I had to put away all the other stuff I had set up for a project I was working on pre-edits.

Oh! Speaking of other projects, I think my Maori hero has a name. Actually, we’ve been dancing around this name for like two weeks, but I didn’t like it. So when I started writing yesterday, I was convinced to use it just “temporarily” until I learned his “real” name. Damn man. I think he fooled me. I think this name is going to stick. I suppose I should stop complaining. At least he has a name–even if I don’t like it. My heroine still won’t share. We came close–I think–but that wasn’t quite right and nothing else in the same area of the alphabet worked. I guess she’ll continue to remain unnamed.

I stayed up too late last night watching baseball and I’m paying the price this morning. The coworker from hell didn’t do much resembling work yesterday. Instead, he yapped all day, disturbing others, and even intruded into other people’s conversations so he wouldn’t actually have to do what he’s being paid to do. The intern who sits next to me went home sick–hope he wasn’t contagious. And it’s still raining here. This is like 36 hours now or something. I need water wings.

I don’t think I have anything else to say, which should tell you how exciting things were on Thursday.

How Does My Garden Grow?

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

I’ve already been outside doing some weeding and helping my dad put down more rock in the area by my house. While I was outside, I also took some pictures of my flowers and garden so I could share them here.

Carnage: Rabbit Attack

Toad Lily:

Peony Tree:

I do have some success. Here’s one of my tiger lilies:

And another:

The Deck with Wind Spinner:

And the front porch flowers are doing well too:

The white stuff you see in some of the pictures are the mothballs to hopefully rabbit-proof the garden. My dad is talking about using chicken fencing to protect the peony tree, so it might find itself boxed in shortly.

I didn’t take any pictures of the rock in front of the house. Rock is rock and it’s not too terribly interesting. I’m hoping, though, that these 8 extra bags will keep the weeds down. Still could have used another 2 or 3 bags, but my dad is talking about driving out to Home Depot later, so we might get more then.

I’m sure this is more than you ever wanted to know, but I’ve invested so much time and energy in my plants and flowers, that I have to share somewhere.

Teaser!

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

My super cool teaser for In the Midnight Hour is up on You Tube now! I’m hugely excited about this and I didn’t want to say anything until I had it up on my website and MySpace page, but I just can’t wait. Patience was never my strong suit, but the video did turn out great, if I say so myself. Midnight Hour Teaser.

I took yesterday afternoon and evening off from writing. I feel hugely guilty saying that because I have revisions due on Monday. I did work during my lunch hour at the EDJ and finished everything except the one section that’s going to require a lot of effort and time to take care of. All the more reason to feel guilty, but I was so exhausted that I’d hose it up if I tried to tackle it. Whenever I try to work on anything when I’m tired, I hate everything and I start gutting it. Inevitably, when I’ve had more rest and look at what I’ve done, I have to restore the original version and start over. I figured I’d skip that step this time and just wait until I had some sleep.

So what did I do on my decadent time off? My dad and I cleaned off my chaise lounge and little plastic table and hauled it up onto the deck. I helped my dad hang my wind spinner (it’s only been sitting on my counter since the beginning of May!). Okay, so my idea of helping with the wind spinner was saying, “it looks good there,” but hey, it had to be done! I also watered my plants and did a couple loads of laundry, watched baseball and played Mah Jong.

Yeah, I know. There was some excitement, though. When I came inside for the evening and bent to put my wood in the patio door track, I discovered a wasp! I must have rolled the door right over him and killed it. The wasp being dead is a good thing. The wasp inside my house was not a good thing.

My dad transplanted more tiger lilies from his house to mine. He’s filled the entire back half of the tree ring with them, so I guess I won’t be buying any more flowers next year to fill that space as I’d thought I would.

A ton of work to do today on the book. I plan to finish that and then do one more read-through tomorrow before emailing it to my editor. I think I might have to post the dancing Hobbes gif again when I finish. I’m going to need to happy dance again. :-)

Raintree: Haunted and Stuff

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

The new flowers came through the hail storm just fine–including the peony tree, which I’d kind of forgotten about until the next day. Whew! The pathetic plant still looks pathetic and I don’t know if it’s going to pull through, but that had nothing to do with the storm.

My deck is now stained and sealed. Hurrah! But they have to come back today to touch up some light spots. I’m hugely relieved that this is done and that I can start putting things out on my deck soon. Like the other flower boxes I have planted and ready to go and my lawn furniture.

I read the best book the other day. Raintree: Haunted by Linda Winstead Jones. This is a June release from Silhouette Nocturne and the second book in a series that opened with Linda Howard’s Raintree: Inferno.

Gideon, the hero, sees and talks to ghosts. He also has an affinity for anything electrical like lightning and tends to blow out computer chips, televisions, cell phones, etc. He works as a homicide detective and his latest case is the murder of his cousin’s roommate. This is also where he finds out he has a new partner. Hope Malory has moved to town to be closer to her mother because she’s concerned about her. She was a police detective in a bigger city and now she’s working homicide with Gideon.

Because of the crime scene and the skill with which the murderer struck, Gideon thinks they have a serial killer on the loose. Little does he know that his serial killer is Ansara. The Ansara and the Raintree have been at war with each other for hundreds and hundreds of years. They, too, have magical abilities like the Raintree, but they use their power for ill. A couple of hundred years earlier, they tried to destroy the Raintree and failed, but now they’ve recouped their numbers and are set to attack again. The serial killer, Tabby, was sent to murder Echo (Gideon’s cousin) and mistook the roommate for the cousin. She’s also supposed to kill Gideon, a job she’s looking forward to with relish.

I really enjoyed this book–tons. Gideon is sexy and honorable and it didn’t take me long to like Hope either. You see, I have this prejudice. I hate reading about female cops. I don’t know why since I like strong heroines, but that’s a personal bias I developed. It didn’t last long. Hope was a well-rounded, three dimensional character and that overcame my predisposition. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but there’s a really cool part farther into the book that has to do with Hope’s name that I totally loved.

This was a book I couldn’t put down. Even though it was getting late, I had to finish it. Tabby was a great villain and the tension was high. I loved Gideon and thought Hope was perfect for him. I just wish that I didn’t have to wait for the final Raintree book. I want to find out what happens in the final story. :-)
