Reappearing Friends and a Furniture Near Miss

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

What is going on with MySpace friends? I know they were cleaning out the deleted profiles, but yesterday about half the number I lost started to magically reappear. There hasn’t been an announcement about that as yet–at least not that I’ve seen.

I heard back from my agent yesterday about the synopsis I sent her and had some small changes to make. I wanted them done last night, but I got hung up on one item and didn’t quite make it. At 10pm, I finally went to bed. And again, my mind didn’t shut down leaving me with yet another night short on sleep.

Oh, I almost forgot! Those of you who are regulars know my coffee table saga. Here’s the latest installment. I went back online to the Coffee Tables Galore site to see if they had anything new in, and on the home page I see this totally fabulous round table! I loved it! All excited, I click to check out the details–and discover the table is 39 inches in diameter.

My hopes–my excitement–were dashed. The coffee table of my dreams is too big for the space I have. I measured it out anyway, wanting there to be some way that it would fit. There wasn’t.

I checked out the matching end table, hoping that maybe that would work. Unfortunately, it didn’t. It was only as wide as the ottoman and that meant if I had my laptop down on it, there’d be no room for my coffee cup. My search will have have to continue.

Culture Talk

I found out yesterday that the Pompeii exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota is open. I’d heard this was coming, but I was on deadline for In Twilight’s Shadow and I completely forgot about it until I saw the article in the paper yesterday.

There was some other Pompeii exhibit that went through Chicago like a year or two ago. I heard about it after the fact, though, and hadn’t gotten the chance to drive down to see it. I was disappointed by that because it sounded really interesting, but driving to St. Paul is much better than going to Chicago. :-) So it’s all working out just fine. I’ll be waiting to go until after the kids are back in school. :-) I’m thinking after Labor Day sometime.

I also discovered yesterday that the Guthrie Theater is doing a production of 1776. That’s one of my favorite musicals ever! I even own the movie on DVD as well as having a couple of copies on VHS tape.

The Guthrie used to send me a mailing every year to let me know what shows are playing for the season, but I didn’t get one this time around. :-( And when I went to check ticket availability on the theater website, all that dates I wanted to attend were marked “limited.” :-( Guess I won’t get to see 1776 live. That’s a huge disappointment.

I found out about 1776 because the Guthrie Theater is on MySpace and sent out a bulletin. Now that’s modern theater!

Revisions continue and I think they’re going well enough. I’m actually thinking I might, just might, end up with enough time to do a straight read through for nitpicky smoothing stuff. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I have one more big, time consuming issue to tackle, and if that ends up being more difficult than I anticipate, that extra time might disappear.

Oh, I’m a Lumberjack and I’m Okay…

With apologies to Monty Python’s Flying Circus, that song title was just too perfect not to use.

I had some fun last night. What falls down must be cleaned up, so there I was with these huge clipper things cutting branches off the downed tree. The trunk that fell is still attached to the tree itself, maybe 15-20 feet up, so we had to be careful not to bring the whole thing down on us as we worked. Anyway, the tree is stripped as high as I could reach with the clippers and what’s left will have to be tackled by someone else. My dad ran everything through a chipper so now there’s more mulch and I’m not sore this morning.

It’s an absolutely beautiful morning here today. The sun is shining, there’s a gentle breeze, humidity is low, and temperatures are comfortable. I have the windows open and I’m sitting here thinking, wow, wouldn’t it be nice if every day could be like this?

Anyway, I’ve been trying to stay off the computer when I’m at home. I’m on it so much when I’m writing and I’m on it all day at work, that I feel like I need to make an effort to sever the connection with I’m home. It’s gotten tough, though, to keep up with email and with MySpace. How do other people keep up with everything and not spend every waking minute on the computer?

Today, my local chapter meets and I plan to attend. I don’t think I’ve been to a meeting since January because of the book I just turned in. I needed those Saturdays to write–desperately–but I missed getting together with everyone. When I get home, I plan to spend the rest of the day outside. Now that my deck is stained, I can put out my flower boxes and lounge chair, hang my wind spinner, and hopefully, get my bug zapper put together and out, too.

And I’m finding my Polynesian mythology book very interesting. I’m only through the first chapter which covers the history of most of the islands in the Polynesian Triangle, but that was nearly riveting. I’m about 90% sure that my heroine is part Tahitian and that the hero is part Maori, but I didn’t get that from reading the book. I suspected it back around the time she first popped into my head, and that sense has become surer over time. I still have no story for the two of them, but I’m itching to know what it is. :-)

Odds and Ends

Guess what I have over on my MySpace page? A movie trailer for the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie! Pretty darn cool what you can do now, isn’t it? If you want to see a preview of POC3, and if you have a high-speed connection, head on over and watch; it’s under the section marked “Movies.” The movie looks like it’s going to be fun, but how can it miss with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom?

I also discovered a new music group that I like–Pink Martini. It was so funny how I found them too. I popped over to someone’s MySpace page to leave a Happy Birthday comment and “Let’s Never Stop Falling In Love” was set to play automatically when the page loaded. Normally, the automatic music annoys me and you’ll notice on my MySpace page it requires the play button be clicked before anything comes on. But I digress. So this song comes on automatically and I loved it. I listened to it a couple of times, then I clicked over to the artist’s MySpace page and listened to the other songs they had up on their site. My next stop was Amazon to order both of their CDs. I’d never heard of this group before, I don’t even know exactly how to describe their music because it’s a blend of styles, but it was fun and I haven’t been this excited about new music since I discovered Loreena McKennitt years ago.

I also bought some really cool planters on QVC. At least I hope they’re cool. They looked like they were on TV. These planters are made to fit over a railing, which would put them at the perfect height for tending plants on both my front porch and my deck. Every time I type something like that, I just think: Whoa! I’m so totally not into gardening–a response to being expected to weed my parents’ huge gardens as a kid–but this year all I want to do is plant flowers. Nesting, maybe? It’s just bizarre.

If I don’t blog daily like you’re used to over the next week or so or if I’m really slow on answering comments, it’ll be because I either don’t have time or don’t have energy. My family has a medical issue going on and it’s fairly serious. And I think that’s all I’m going to say on that.

A Movie-less Saturday

Sunday, March 11th, 2007

There’s no movie review today. Sorry for those of you who were looking for one. I was going to watch my weekly movie last night, but when I picked it up and saw the run time was 133 minutes, I thought, I just can’t spend that long watching tonight. Honestly, whatever happened to 90 minute movies?

I was invited to a new site designed especially for readers and authors to talk about books. It’s called The Yack and it’s free to join. It looks like it’s going to be fun once we get some more romance people over there. :-) The site looks relatively new and there are less than 1000 people on there right now–at least as far as I can see. And of course, I’m still on MySpace. Feel free to visit me there and friend me as well.

Speaking of MySpace, it’s been a weird weekend for that. Yesterday, I had someone put in a request to friend me, and when I went to look at his profile, it was private. That isn’t the weird part, I’ve had private profile people friend me before. The strange thing was this kid was 15 years old per the information available. I try not to friend people under 18, but I do have a few teenage girls who love to read paranormal romance. A boy, though? Maybe I’m being sexist, but I just couldn’t quite see him as a fan.

Then this morning, I get up and check in at MySpace and I have a friend request from another guy. His profile is private too, but it says he’s 21. I hesitated, but he’s an adult, so I approved his request, then looked at his profile again now that I could read it. It says on his page that he’s 14! It gets better, I page down to the book section and it says that he hates to read books, but he’ll look at magazines. Then why the hell is he friending me? I can’t figure this one out. Anyway, I was hugely uneasy about the age and I deleted him as a friend. I think I was successful, but MySpace isn’t the easiest thing to figure out sometimes.

My question now is why the sudden interest from teenage boys? Is there something I don’t know? Eek!

I had a window open yesterday. It was so fabulous to be able to do that after a long winter. It was a little cold yet, but I’d burned a bag of popcorn (ick!) and I wanted that smell out of my house. :-) It was one of those mini-bags and I set the timer for 1 min 30 seconds and walked away. By the time I realized it had stopped popping, but the microwave was still running, I was too late to save it. Yes, it’s pretty sad when a person can’t successfully cook microwave popcorn.

The book from hell continues to be the book from hell and I don’t want to talk about my frustrating day working on it, so I won’t. I’ll just say I can’t wait to finish this thing. Gah!

Why Do a Book Trailer?

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

When I had my trailer up for Eternal Nights, I went to some boards to tell people about it. At one of the boards, someone mentioned something along the lines of: it was great, but she preferred to read blurbs and excerpts. My reply was that there were the dedicated readers and the casual readers and that I did the trailer to attract the notice of people who don’t read regularly. I’d never discussed my theory with anyone, and if I read it somewhere, I don’t recall the post, but A Peek at Romance has a blog up about this very topic. (BTW, the video featured is mine! Yea!) It’s interesting reading if you’re one of the wafflers on book videos or if you’re just curious about them.

I can’t get to my home page on MySpace which means I can’t read private messages nor can I approve friend requests. Sigh. I can login just fine. My page is still there. I’ve tried clearing cookies and caches and rebooting the computer. I’ve tried to access it on two different computers. I just plain can’t get in. I can’t even file an error report without getting the error. I found an email address for MySpace, which is probably not for help, but it’s the only point of contact I could find. I emailed them and wait for help. It’s very frustrating!

And sorry, but y’all are getting a weather report here. It’s bright, sunny, looks almost beautiful outside. It’s also -34 with the wind chill. Yep. MINUS. I’m not leaving the house today, that’s for darn sure.
