Saturday Night In Minnesota

Monday, February 11th, 2008

My parents were out of town this weekend, which meant I had to get their mail and newspaper for them. Normally, this isn’t a big deal, but Minnesota plunged back into the deep freeze and hit wind chills of -40. Saturday night was the worst of it, or so they said. So of course, that’s the night it happened.

It would be going to bed and wondering, “Gee, did I remember to close my parents’ garage door after I dropped the mail off at their house?”

Of course I did, I told myself. If I hadn’t, the neighbor across the street (who was asked to keep an eye out on the house) would have called. But what if my dad didn’t give him my phone number?

There were other arguments back and forth and I was 95% certain that I’d shut the door. It was that 5% of uncertainty, though, that nagged at me. We’d had cars in our neighborhood broken into a year or so ago and my dad’s snowblower is in the garage–right there in front.

Finally, at about 11:45, I couldn’t take it anymore. I got in my car and drove over to make absolutely 100% certain that the door was down. It was. I could have stayed in my nice warm house and saved myself a midnight run in frigid temps.

The cold air, though, woke me up and I knew I wasn’t going back to sleep any time soon, so I booted up the computer and worked for a while. I fixed all the continuity errors I made on Sunday after I’d had some sleep. :-)

I Dream of Summer

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

My new amaryllis is beginning to have the flower pod open and just in the nick of time. The weather here has been horrible (try -36 with the wind chill when I woke up yesterday) and any sign of spring is welcome right now. Okay, flowers blooming indoors isn’t really a sign of spring, but hey, I’ll take what I can find. And of course, like always, there’ll be pictures when the amaryllis blooms. This one is a cream/red mixture.

I keep getting emails from the nurseries I’ve ordered from–and a few others that I signed up for–and I’m so tempted to get some of those huge begonias. They’d have to be indoor plants because, like the amaryllis, they’re sissy flowers, but they’re big and gorgeous and I’m thinking, wow, wouldn’t that add some nice color in the winter. I’m getting just the slightest bit desperate for warm weather. :-)

Of course, it helps that the gnats that came with the second amaryllis appear to be gone now. If I still was fighting those damn things, I wouldn’t be quite so tempted by new plants. I hate bugs and don’t want any in my house, even if they’re only little nuisances.

Book Time

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Last winter and spring I was writing a book set in August. Right now I’m writing a book set in July. It’s really hard to get in a summer frame of mind, to even imagine shorts and sandals when it’s icy cold. Saturday morning in Minneapolis, it was -31. I spent a lot of time when I wrote In Twilight’s Shadow relying on my memory of what warm felt like. :-)

One of the things I started to do when I wrote In the Midnight Hour was to print out calendar pages and write down what chapter/scene occurs on which day. This ended up being a brilliant idea and I’ve continued doing it for all my books since then. Now, without needed to reread chapters and make notes, I know exactly how much time has passed in the story and between events. If something traumatic happens to my heroine in chapter 2, I’ll know that it’s only three days later when I’m in, say, chapter ten. I might have written it months earlier, but it’s still fresh for her and that’s something I need to keep in mind.

So on my island counter top, I have the calendar pages for July and August out. The story starts the weekend after Independence Day, so I don’t think I’ll make it into August–my stories tend to play out in short time periods–but just in case. :-)

Mea Culpa Redux

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Um, sorry Packer and Charger fans. Yes, it’s true. I was rooting for your teams. This football playoff season I’ve only had 1 team I’ve wanted to win actually do so. That was back that first week with all the wild card teams playing. I guess this means New England is destined to win the Super Bowl because I can’t stand that team or their quarterback. If anyone’s doing a pool, you know who to bet on. :-) It’s really tough being a jinx–takes all the fun out of watching the games.

It is monumentally cold here still. I think the lowest we went was -31 with the wind chill when I first woke up on Saturday morning, but even now, my toes are cold and I am so not looking forward to going outside. I think they should dome the entire metro area and heat it. :-) It’s a long walk from where the peons park at NWA to the door.

Flower report: Looks like I’ll have to throw out both poinsettias at some point. The red one has been shedding since before Christmas and it looks like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree. Now the white one it starting to lose leaves, too.

The Power of Two

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

I was making some online rounds this week and discovered that The Power of Two is listed as Out of Stock on Dorchester’s website. What that means is the publisher has no more copies, and once places like Amazon and BN.com sell out of what they have, this book will be out of print. I’ve been through this once before and it took two years for that title to be reprinted. So if you want a copy of TPOT, you might want to pick it up soon.

Two other books in the 2176 series are out of stock, too, and after the holidays I’ll check into whether or not the series is scheduled to be printed again or if it’s going to sit like this for a while. When my first book became unavailable in 2004, I fielded a ton of emails from people asking where they could find a copy. I didn’t even have extra copies because I had no warning it was going out of print. This time, I actually do have copies of TPOT, so if prices get as high as they did on Ravyn’s Flight, I might have to hold a contest or two to give some copies away.

It’s snowing here and it’s not supposed to stop until Monday. I think you can fill in the part where I whine for yourself, so I’ll skip that.

The Name Game…Redux

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

Remember when Logan put me through all kinds of trouble to come up with his surname? Remember how I said I was never complaining again about a character telling me his/her name because it made everything so much easier? Well, I’m being forced to go through this hell again–Hope won’t share her last name. Grr. Okay, granted, I’m not doing anything right now that makes it needed and the important part was her first name, but I want to know. Besides, name does play a role in personality and she’s a big enigma to me.

What’s even more frustrating is that I read through what I wrote yesterday and it all pretty much sucks. Considering the sleep thing, and how the nap messed things up, it’s not a huge surprise, but I was hoping that I wouldn’t need to rewrite it all.

My other cross to bear is my Polynesian couple who still have no names, but who’ve started sharing scenarios. They’re all similar, so I’m thinking the premise of the story is going to stick. I guess it’ll just be a matter of what form it takes. The stories I’m seeing so far, though, aren’t really workable as a book, but this is percolation stage and that’s okay.

The stones were delivered for my new garden’s retaining wall yesterday. It’s amazing how much that stuff costs, but it’ll look so nice when it’s done. Of course, there’ll be pictures. :-) I’m sure y’all have been sad for months without flower/garden shots posted here.

And because I can’t resist whining about the weather….It was summer in Minnesota this last weekend. Temps were in the mid-80s and I was running around in short sleeves and still thinking it was hot. Tuesday it got cold. Way cold. I seriously wished I was wearing my winter jacket when I left work yesterday afternoon. It’s 35 degrees with the wind chill and I think I’ll be putting it on this morning when I leave the house. Brr! I even had to put socks on which I totally hate.

Another Sunday Without a Movie Review

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

I tried to watch The Bourne Supremacy last night, but I just couldn’t get into the movie. I guess I just wasn’t in the mood for it, or maybe I had trouble because I’m not a huge fan of Matt Damon. Either way, I’m sending it back unwatched. If I get a sudden desire to see it, I can always add it back into my queue later.

Yesterday, as I cleaned, I had Go Cubs, Go playing on my computer. It’s the song they do at the end of every Cubs victory at Wrigley Field. Made the cleaning go a little faster, but I didn’t get everything finished that I wanted to do. I sat down to take a break, the Cubs game came on, and the next thing I know, it’s 5:30. :-) It was so nice, though, to sit and watch a game without any stress involved. Since the Cubs had already clinched their division and are in no danger of having the best record in the National League, it didn’t matter if they won or lost. They did end up winning, BTW.

Storms rolled through about 4am this morning and it’s been raining off and on all day today. That’s making it really hard for me to get moving. I just feel like vegging out and I can’t. I need to get some work done today. What is it about rainy days that makes me just want to curl up in bed and nap?

Wasted Days and Wasted Nights

Friday, September 21st, 2007

So yesterday pretty much ended up being a bust for writing. I did a little tweaking during lunch, maybe added a quarter of a page or so, but I got nothing accomplished when I got home. I’d barely checked email when it started to lightning, so that meant off the computer. The severe thunderstorm warning turned into a tornado warning when a funnel cloud was spotted not that far from where I live. Lucky me, my city was in the path, so I dragged the laptop (life support! It has all my books on it.), my purse, and my car keys to the basement and settled down to wait out the 45 minutes of the warning.

Talk about a waste of time, but better safe than dead, and the weather was pretty rough for a while. There was even hail and I had standing water in my tree ring.

That was pretty much the most exciting event of the day, and for a while with the tornado sirens screeching, it was more than enough.

So I got a new gardening catalog on Wednesday, and this one had some different stuff than the company I ordered all my other bulbs from. I’ve got at least a dozen pages dogeared and I’m sooo tempted. I really shouldn’t order any more, but some of them are beautiful and they even have a garden layout (including a plant collection to buy) that’s designed especially to attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Now how cool would that be? Plus, I wouldn’t have to play designer, they have it all laid out for me.

When I mentioned it to my dad, he threatened to take my gardening catalogs away from me. :-) Okay, so I tend to be just a tad compulsive and gardening is my latest thing. It doesn’t mean that everyone won’t enjoy the beautiful flowers I’ll have next spring, summer and fall, right?

BTW, the Milwaukee Brewers have a player named Corey Hart. Every single time I hear that name, I think Never Surrender. :-) And wasn’t he the Sunglasses at Night guy, too? Or am I confusing him with that other singer from the 80s?

Glamour Don’ts and Crimes of Fashion

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

The storms that rolled through on Monday night didn’t cause any damage by me, but less than 10 miles to my east, they sure picked up steam. When I drove into work on Tuesday morning, NWA had about half a dozen trees down and some big branches as well. That was my first intimation of how severe the weather was.

Then that afternoon, one of my tech writers was telling me the storm woke him and his wife up. They saw the large tree in their backyard at a 45 degree angle and headed for the basement. Wow. Last night, the news was full of damage reports from the Twin Cities. The weather guy said the straight-line winds were around 71 mph when they went through. Double wow. Since I fell right back asleep after noting the storm, I’m glad it wasn’t severe like that in my area. Yikes!

Before I went to bed last night, I turned on the Weather Channel. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to have another middle of the night wake up call.

It’s really odd. We were in a draught for most of the summer. People kept walking around saying, “when are we going to get some rain?” Now we’re walking around going, “I can’t believe we got another storm.” Rain totals for August are 9.29″. The all-time record for the month is 9.31″ and average is 4.something”.

Enough about weather, right?

I stop by my parents’ house almost every day to see them, check in on them, etc. I usually stay about an hour or so and then go home to write. Last night, my mom asked me if I had time to give her my opinion on what she wanted to wear to the wedding and rehearsal dinner this weekend. I knew this wasn’t going to be quick and I was right.

Picking out the outfit for the wedding actually ended up being pretty easy. Time consuming, though, because my mom has slowed down so much in the last six months. If only it had been that easy with the rehearsal dinner choice.

She comes out in this awful dress. Now I’m not exactly a fashion maven, but I took one look and said, “no.” That wasn’t good enough. I had to zip up the back all the way because clearly that was the only reason the dress was hideous. NOT! It didn’t look any better zipped. Talk about a Glamour Don’t! I told her so and she argued with me.

First of all, it was far too big for her, especially on top. Secondly, it was too long, almost coming down to the floor. If it had been a straighter cut on the skirt, it might not have been a problem, but it wasn’t and it just looked wrong with that style.

The worst problem, however, was how ugly the pattern on the dress was. It looked as if she’d stolen someone’s brocade drapes and had them made into a dress. I told her it was like the Carol Burnett take off on Gone With the Wind. Mom didn’t find that funny.

She went and asked my dad for a second opinion–I guess she really wanted to wear this dress because she kept saying, but I like it. My dad told her it was too big, too. She argued a bit longer before conceding.

Rehearsal dinner outfit two was better, but it was slacks and a matching blouse with a pattern on it. It was far too much pattern. She gave up this argument faster. I told her to wear wedding outfit 1 as the rehearsal dinner outfit, but she didn’t want to do that. Sigh. She said she’s going to keep looking, which will probably mean more fashion shows for me. I ended up spending two hours over at the house and didn’t get the amount of work done on the synopsis that I was hoping for. Sigh.

As I was winding down for the night, I found a show on E! called Crimes of Fashion. It was about celebrity Glamour Don’ts. Definitely ironic timing.

By Any Other Name

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

I’ve run into a problem. My very minor secondary character has morphed into a major player in my proposal and that means she needs a name. I’ve mentioned before that I never get to name the characters with big roles. They pretty much come in and either tell me what they’re called outright or they give me the starting letter and let me look through baby name books until I find the right one.

So anyway, my minor character needs a name before I can proceed with the synopsis. About now some people are probably thinking: why don’t I just give her any old moniker and change it when I find the right one? Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way for me. I have to have the correct name or I can’t move forward, which is what I’m dealing with.

She hasn’t given me much to work on. I have a sense that her name begins with an N. Or maybe a T. :-(

I’ve looked through pretty much every baby name book I own. I’ve combed through almost every name website that I have bookmarked. I’m not finding anything under N or T that made her say, “That’s me!” So I’m wondering if maybe her name starts with some other letter. After all, if I’ve gone through the number of names that I have and haven’t hit the right one, it must be because I’m looking in the wrong places.

I don’t know much about her yet. She’s quirky, changeable, and torn between loyalties. She’s a little on the passive side, but I think it’s because she’s been surrounded by such forceful personalities all her life. This woman is Shona’s (the heroine) best friend.

So that was my night. No productive synopsis work, but hours and hours spent looking through those darn name books. Finally, about 8:15 last night, I had enough. I wasn’t ready to go to bed (although I should have since I was exhausted!) and I decided to install my super cool new Silhouette cutter. For those who missed the original rhapsody about my online shopping binge, the Silhouette is a tool for scrapbooking or paper crafting. It’s hooked up to the computer and can cut out any true type font that’s loaded in a huge variety of sizes. It arrived yesterday and I figured I could install the software, plug in the machine, do a sample cutout, and be in bed by 9pm. I was wrong.

The software didn’t take too long to load, but installation on my dinosaur computer wasn’t as quick as I would have liked. Still not too bad, though. Then I had to download some program from Microsoft for the thing to run. With high speed, that took minutes. Again, it was installation that slowed me down. Then I was warned to download any new security patches. This is where the night started to go to hell.

First, I had to update the software that Microsoft uses to determine which updates the computer needs, then after that was installed, it scanned and determined I needed three patches. They downloaded in probably a minute.

And took 45 minutes to install!!!

OMG! I was getting so antsy. I have a patience problem anyway, but when it was 9:45 and it’s still installing, I really became frustrated. By 10pm I was swearing at the computer to hurry up, using the language I normally save for my commute to and from the EDJ (Evil Day Job). :-) By the time I was able to get to bed, it was 10:20, almost an hour and a half later than I’d planned.

The storm rolled through at 2:45, waking me from a sound sleep. I got up, checked out the window and then crawled back into bed and fell immediately back to sleep. I didn’t hear the alarm.

No time for coffee, but I figured, I could skip coffee one day, and really, I should cut the caffeine out all together. I lasted about an hour at the EDJ, then I made a jumbo cup of coffee. Only now do I feel alert enough to blog–and that’s iffy. Guess I won’t be giving up my morning java any time soon.
