Captain Cai Randolph and Special Forces Captain Jake Tucker have been paired via nanoprobes in their brains. Cai sits behind a console, transmitting real-time data to Jake who's out in the field with his team. He believes she's artificial intelligence, not a real person, and she's been happy to let him think that, but now everything has changed. She thinks she's found her missing parents on the Raft Cities and Cai has set things in motion so that the UCE Army will send her along with Jake's team to that lawless place, but without his approval, she'll be left behind. That's unacceptable.

 Jake isn't happy to learn the truth about who Cai is and he's even less happy to find himself attracted to the woman who's been in his head for the past five years. But when he discovers there's a very real threat against her and that he can't trust anyone else to protect her, he agrees to take Cai with him on the mission. All too soon, though, pretending to be her lover isn't enough and Jake wants her for real.
